When we analyze a phenomenon, concepts, assumptions, assumptions are created about defining the phenomenon itself from various points of view in order to specify and organize it. All of the aforementioned are called theories because through it the different phenomena are studied that are then investigated based on hypotheses and conclusions are reached that give rise to programs, guides, guidelines, etc. that frame a body of knowledge such as the case of nursing. It also has philosophy, paradigms, domains. (Kaur, 2014). Nursing is identified as a domain in a paradigm that has several links such as the client, the environment, health, and the nurse. There are several types of nursing theories that define the purpose of these, guiding the practice of nursing and creating new knowledge. Before talking about the relationship between nursing theories and advanced nursing practice, we must mention any of these types of theories and what their importance is. (Urra, 2009).
Nursing theories are categorized into three groups. The first group is that of the great theories of nursing. They are based on broad, abstract and complex concepts that generally mark the ideas related to components such as people and their health. They are usually derived from the nurse’s own experience in theory. The second group are the mid-range ones that delve into specific areas instead of addressing general concepts. They arise from nursing practice, research, or theories of similar disciplines. The last group. Theories at the practice level that narrow their focus and focus specifically on concepts that relate to a defined patient population at a given time. You are directly at the patients even more than the rest of the theories. (Revista Enfermería Universitaria, 2007).
Nursing theories guide the nurse in different ways, give a sense of belonging and identity to the nurse by helping patients. In society, nursing theories show the nurse her role and responsibility in her decision to study this career. When it comes to nursing education, theories are largely incorporated whereby nurses learn the aspects of care, techniques and strategies to use, diagnosing diseases and developing treatment plans among many other things. Nursing has evolved in its education and training reaching postgraduate levels as high as the advanced practice nurse and even the doctorate. These tiers through these theories help shape the strategies for serving a healthcare facility in ways that are aligned with a variety of expected outcomes. (
For example, this theory is used by pediatric nurse practitioners (PNP) and family nurse practitioners (FNP) to develop treatment strategies, such as the use of rocking chairs in hospital daycare centers, that help foster a comforting environment that fosters bonding between parents and children. The BSN to Advanced Practice training program is designed for students to gain leadership, analytics, and communication experience through a robust curriculum delving into nursing theory and essential nursing concepts. These theories that are inseparable from nurse training provide high-quality medical care by being trained with sufficient knowledge to work effectively within its parameters. They also help professionals see health conditions as a changing variable that will allow them to interpret how the environment affects the client’s consciousness. All this knowledge is focused on helping to face future nursing challenges and can offer the best service to their patients. theory has a more important role in nursing career with a great role in society. (Dozier’s, 2018). Therefore, I think it is important for the nurse to study these theories in advance to obtain information that helps to provide quality service to patients. In the quest for effective and holistic care, nurses rely on sound theoretical principles that develop and implement the plan of care. As we move forward in time, academic nurses, researchers and professionals in general must place practice guided by theory at the core of nursing. (Doctor of Nursing science, 2019).
The projection of the development of nursing through theories shows that there will be a type of theories that will be developed to describe, explain or predict a phenomenon within a context that explains or specifies and this is the practical area. At the same time, a new movement of theories with different paradigms will emerge in search of knowledge related to the phenomenon related to the human being-universe-health process. The relationship between theories and advanced practice is close. Theories provide a basis for creating hypotheses regarding practice and making it possible to obtain a foundation for the actions that nursing takes. They are the knowledge base for the science of nursing and, in turn, it cannot be forgotten that paradigms can expire or reappear, this means that they are neither so absolute nor so perpetual, therefore using theoretical criteria in practice is the way to validate or discard.(Saleh, 2018).
In conclusion, they guide professional practice, offer a new perspective, form a structure of thought. They detect the role that identifies nursing in society. They establish the infirmary as a single unit. They provide the body of knowledge typical of the profession, they create a common and own language facilitating communication between health personnel. They favor professional autonomy, in research and in nursing practice. They induce the emergence of a “new generation in nursing”, with an identity focused on the health of the patient. they are an abstraction that materializes through the practice of the nursing process to provide optimal patient care. In short, they are an overlap of concepts and knowledge.
