Step 1: Selecting a Research Paper Topic Assignment (10 points) and Discussion (10 Points)

Throughout this course, you will be working toward creating a research-based paper on a disease or disorder of the nervous system. Creating this paper will draw upon your knowledge of the nervous system, the methods used to study it, as well as practical applications of this knowledge to understand or treat a disease or disorder.

The process of developing this paper will be broken down into three steps and you will receive feedback and support at each step. This week, you’ll be selecting a topic and locating five research articles related to your topic. You’ll be writing research summaries in week 5. After receiving feedback, you’ll complete the research paper in week 7.

Step 1: Selecting a Research Paper Topic Assignment (10 points) and Discussion (10 Points)

The purpose of this assignment is to prepare to write a paper that will:

Identify the biological basis of a disease or disorder of the nervous system (This could be at the level of neurotransmitters, hormones, cells, brain structures or another aspect of the nervous system.)

Summarize current research to better understand the role of the nervous system in the disease/disorder

Part of this assignment will include participating in a writing workshop. The writing workshop is hosted by a writing expert from the UMUC Effective Writing Center (EWC). You will find links to this workshop in the “Do” section of the course this week.

Please complete the following this week:

1. Participate in the writing workshop with the Effective Writing Center (EWC) expert.(skip)

Then, address the following in a separate document uploaded to this assignment:

2. Identify your topic and summarize symptoms: Identify the disease or disorder you will write about. Summarize some of the key symptoms of the disease/disorder.

3. Identify one or more nervous system changes: List key types of changes in nervous system associated with the disease or disorder.

4. Locate five peer-reviewed journal articles on research related to the nervous system in your topic: Locate a minimum of five research articles that investigate the nervous system in the disease/disorder that you will write about. List a full APA-style reference to each article. Do not include books, encyclopedias, government reports, or web pages because they are not peer-reviewed journal articles.
