In your opinion and supported by literature and current news, describe the state of our country’s opioid status.
I feel the state of the opioid crisis is putting a lot of addicts and families to have no hope. Having a stepdaughter who is addicted, we as a family have been through it all. Christine is 26 years old and has had an addiction problem since the age of 17 years old. She has been all over the country to the very best, and top-rated treatment facilitates. Over the last five years, I have seen how insurance carriers dictate her treatment plan and how we, as parents have to fight always to keep her in treatment. Not only do we have insurance issues, but her support group has shone Christine as well. Christine was not allowed to participate in Tampa’s twelve-step recovery program because she was taking suboxone for her high addiction to opioids. By her not having a sponsor and support group, Christine relapse this January for the 8 times.
Identify at least two key points of the country’s opioid crisis impact on society and the outcomes.
1. Society needs to be more open minded to medicated -assisted treatment. With FDA approved medications society needs to be aware that its safe even with pregnant women and has demonstrated shown to be effective in improving outcomes for individuals who are opioids use disorders. One important factor is that the individual needs to maintain therapy for greater than three years to prevent relapse.
2. Treating the addictions and mental health conditions needs to be addressed. The treatment plan should be person-centered. Many times only the addictions gets treated and research has shown that addressing the mental health conditions and tailoring the treatment plan has shown be successful.
