A thesis expresses the main idea/point for the entire paper. It often contains the subject to be addressed along with the writer’s attitude. It is generally the last sentence of the introductory paragraph.
Example:
In Sunday’s editorial, Jim Olsen ineffectively argues that Wal-Mart destroys the entrepreneurial movement in small towns.
Subject of the analysis: Sunday’s editorial by Olsen
Writer’s opinion about the article: Olsen ineffectively makes his argument
Plan Your Work–The Outline
For our purposes the outline should use roman numerals. A blank outline has been provided within the files section.
I. Introduction: introduce the subject, briefly summarize the article, transition to the thesis
II. Point that Proves Thesis: provide specific details that illustrate your point
III. Point 2 that Proves Thesis: provide specific details that illustrate your point
IV. Conclusion: restate the thesis and make final comments to prove your point
