Description
The personal statement should describe succinctly your reasons for applying to the proposed program at the Viterbi School of Engineering, your preparation for this field of study, study interests, future career plans, and other aspects of your background and interests which may aid the admissions committee in evaluating your aptitude and motivation for graduate study. There is no required/recommended format or length for the personal statement.
I already wrote my personal statement. I need it to be rephrased, enhanced, and edited to an advanced level which is appropriate for a prominent graduate school such as USC.

My Personal Statement for the University of Southern California
Growing up in a different country, I have always been passionate about the construction. Six years ago, I had the opportunity to fulfill this dream by immigrating to California. In spite of the fact that my close relative’s base was in east coast, I started this passion here in the city of angels. A sense of great momentum in my mind, an insatiable feeling for progressing, growing and building a new life in the land of opportunities. I realized that, as Mark Twine undeniably quoted “The secret of getting ahead is getting started.” This fact, always work. In order to move ahead, one must be active and taking action. In the following personal statement, I would like to elaborate a little on my reasons behind this application and explain more about my personality as well.
One of my main reasons for applying to the program is to enhance my knowledge to a more advance level. As a person who started his educational career later in his life, I strongly feel that it is essential to complete the process by entering to a prominent graduate school such as USC. There is a Persian anecdote that says the one who complete the tasks, actually has finished the work. In my opinion, a good graduate school augments a regular person to a different person. It enhances the educator’s ability of critical thinking, reasoning and resilience. I believe the USC absolutely provides this platform for ones who are looking for demonstrating their capability, determination and enthusiasm.
Another major reason for applying to USC is to expand my educational network with academic professionals such as faculties, professors, students etc. As a matter of fact, I believe although an advanced technical knowledge in the major is indispensable, the connections and networks you make though plays a pivotal role in your future career. In other words, they are complement of each other, neither of them solely is sufficient for an expert in construction industry. Moreover, the connection with people who are more sophisticated could escalate your status and viewpoints as well. Needless to say that, graduating in a graduate school at the level of the USC will cause a mutation towards a successful future.
Preparation for the master of construction management in the USC could be solely considered as my proximal goal. I believe achieving this important goal could be analogous to the foundation of a structure, the distal goal, which I will be planning to build in the future (my graduation); Thus, breaking down the goals into smaller pieces just similar to what we do for construction scheduling, Work Breakdown structure, is a material decision for being successful in my educational career. I certainly know that there will be another higher pinnacle, another tough challenge a head of me; therefore, I have been working on myself mentally to be completely geared up for the important decision. I strongly believe that the most important competition in one’s life, as scholars reiterated that, could be the competition with myself. I love to compare myself with what I used to be and enjoy my progression. This is the purest form of a competition in one’s life.
Specifying my field of interest in construction management is a special matter to me. I love this major because of its broadness. In other words, construction management spans a lot of spheres such as civil engineering, project management, legal, economy, accounting, real estates, etc. this fact makes a person with multifaceted specialties. In other words, This mutability is the advantage of being a construction manager because it opens a variety of job opportunities such as project engineering, project management, estimating, scheduling, contract administration, quality control/assurance, field engineering etc.
Needless to say that the Construction Management’s discipline covers a vast administration area as well. For instance, CM as an Agent, Owner’s representative, which in classical form, it used to be the responsibility of the Architect and Engineers (A/E), now is a CM discipline. Similarly, CM at Risk which can take over the full responsibility of the General Contractor for accomplishing the project.
I strongly believe that the most important perspective regarding my future career is comprised of not only achieving a high academic knowledge in a prominent university, but also developing an excellent reputation in the construction industry. This is my optimum aspiration which I am proceeding towards that in a determining way. As a result of fulfilling these goals, the opportunities will become abundant around you unconditionally. Because these attributes are admired by everyone and they will remain in people’s mind everlastingly unless the person who achieved it would ruin it. In other words, an excellent reputation is achieved in years, but it could be squandered in a moment.
Having a background in heavy industry and residential construction for more than ten years taught me how valuable the education is. This fact has been proven to me during my first internship as a construction management proficient this summer. This internship was a valuable opportunity for me to work in a CM company in the US. As a matter of facts, I was able to distinguish between a practical background experiences alongside with an academic knowledge. The integration of these two important matters caused me to learn a deeper level of things during my internship which was great. I believe having more internship during my education can reinforce what I will be learning in the graduate school as well.
In terms of my personal life, I have a hard working personality. To be more precise, I was fortunate to take a class with one of the greatest instructor of CSUN in the Management and Organizational behavior class last term. The instructor distributed all students the PACE Palette Scorecard and she let us to explore which tier we belong to. Although I already knew my category, but knowing more and more about your personality is always an amazing thing. I belong to the Yellow area as a first place and Green area as a second choice. This is considered as a hardworking, loyal, trustworthy, punctual, methodical, etc.; therefore, I am absolutely geared up for the tough responsibility ahead of me in the graduate school. I will do whatever it takes to successfully graduate in the USC as it is appropriate for the advanced level of the school.
In terms of personal life, I would like to express that I have my own family. I got married here in Los Angeles and I have a nine-month old daughter. I am proud of my spouse because despite all difficulties, she has always been a great supporter for me. This fact has given me the opportunity to be able to expand my progression in other aspects of my life as well. And I am utterly grateful for that.
