Watch the presentation above to propose an elementary theory that explains what is going on in the “puzzling” communication situation described in the interactive presentation. You should read through the interactive presentation before contributing to your group’s discussion. As a group, answer the questions following questions:
1. Why would more people give to a charitable organization if the request included the phrase “even a penny will help” (i.e., what is the process by which this works?)
2. To clarify your theory, what concepts need to be defined?
3. How could you test/refine your theory?
o To test your theory, what else might we measure besides whether people give (yes/no) and how much they give?
o If your theory is correct, are there conditions under which we would predict that Even a Penny requests should work better or worse?
– illustrate concepts from chapter 1 (e.g., Burgoon’s definition of theory) by developing and elaborating an informed set of hunches that explain the details of the “puzzling communication situation” (I.e., how and why the EPH strategy works). your post should define key terms explicitly, offer detailed explanations for specifics of the puzzling situation, suggest creative ways of testing the proposed theory, and elaborate on (rather than just agreeing with) other students’ ideas.
