Description
In this 1-2 page paper, you will identify the environmental issue or controversy that you plan to use as your focus for the semester’s Advocacy Portfolio assignment, and open a channel of communication between us to start talking about it. I’d suggest selecting from the list of possible topics on the opening survey and syllabus (e.g., hydraulic fracturing, food politics, air/water/soil quality, etc.), though you’re free to propose a topic here.
In the paper, you will describe the controversy/issue and discuss your relationship to it. No outside sources are required, though you are welcome to cite sources as they support the paper. Here are some questions to help get you thinking and writing about the topic:
Name the controversy/issue, and describe it: Who is involved in the controversy/issue, and what is at stake for them? What aspects of “the environment” might be involved? How long has this been a controversy/issue?
How does the issue/controversy relate to you–what is at stake for you in this controversy? How did you initially become interested in it? What questions and feelings arise for you when you read about the issue/controversy? Why would you like to build the Advocacy Portfolio on this issue/controversy?
